
The Business Benefits of Positive, Passionate and Proactive people
When did you last notice (and feel delighted with) really outstanding service?
Recently, whilst visiting Las Vegas, I discovered a taxi driver who is practically a celebrity himself because he does much more than he's expected to do. Not only does he
- keeps his cab sparkling clean
- smiles
- arrives on time and
- plays every customer a DVD of Las Vegas.
Not only does this driver do a great job (and get noticed for it), he feels great and passes that on to his passengers. The cynical might say 'he's just lucky - it's in his genes!' I say he's making deliberate, positive choices - we can all do that too!
Positive, passionate and lively people are a magnet for success - they attract - and their opposite repels.

You can install a “can do” attitude in your people through training. You can avoid bringing people into your organisation who don't fit the success culture you want to grow and maintain. Recently I went looking to buy a new mobile phone and asked for some help. I am greeted with
- 'well you can see what's available on the wall there' or
- 'I'm not really sure' or '
- no we can't do that' - deadpan, monotone, I'm an android!
I went into three different shops and none of their sales people came anywhere near to giving me confidence in their products (or themselves). What they were actually saying to me was
- 'I don't want to be here';
- 'I couldn't care less what you want';
- 'this job is so-oh (with emphasis) boring.'
A friend had similar experiences in a car showroom - no welcome, just a stony faced 'if you haven't got your license you can't test drive the car.' Another salesman suggested 'if you could make your decision by 4 o'clock - I leave then!' My friend did buy a car from this firm - when he found a salesman that actually treated him like a valued customer (who managed, through shear attitude, to repair what colleagues had almost written off.).
